Finalist of “The Voice” (Italy) and one of the show’s most extraordinary participants, Tommaso Pini recently released the new music video “Summertime Sadness”. He also sang this Lana Del Rey song cover on Blind audition year and a half ago. We managed to get an exclusive interview with the talented up and coming singer.

Why did you choose that cover again? The song made your popular, but time passes…

Yes, but everyone has that one “old song” that they love forever. For me it’s “Summertime Sadness”. It put me on the map and gave me some recognition abroad. Now I’m working on an album, and as you know, at the moment I can’t release new material from it before it”s finished. Many people have asked for the full version of my “Summertime Sadness” cover, so I thought it’d be a nice present for them.

Ever since The Voice you’ve been known as an artist who performs covers of popular songs. Are there any recently released songs that make you think “gosh, why isn’t this song mine”?

“All Is Full Of Love” by Bjork. It’s not new but it makes me shiver each time I’m listening to it. Such emotion! Lyrics, sounds, harmony, ambience… I think it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Speaking of emotions, what were the coolest and the most frustrating parts of shooting your music video?

(Smiles) We were shooting in winter in Stockholm. It was really cold, nearly 30 degrees below zero and I was dressed only in a velvet jacket. To look credible without showing your suffering is a great challenge, especially when your face has completely lost sensitivity. But this experience nevertheless was very funny and inspirational, because I discovered some amazing locations with impressive atmospheres.

Tell us about the team who worked with you on the video.

(Smiles) The truth is that the only people who worked on this video were myself and my producer Sergio Dall’Ora. I always loved the idea of filming and writing scripts. I’m making my first steps with that now, experimenting with different ideas. Thanks to my producer I can really dedicate myself to that process and not just be an actor, but an active participant, a part of it.

What’s behind the story we will see in the video?

We decided to make a video in the middle of winter to emphasize the contrast between the original song and my version. The idea is that when you lose a person you love, you feel frozen inside and it doesn’t matter what season it is outside.

You played different characters in the video. Does that mean that the story is about the loss of yourself?

Oh, no (smiles). There is no real story. There are several moments, there are states of mind constantly changing and those states of mind are represented by locations, lighting, images, glances, movements, and sounds. Also in this case the contrast between the various sounds and my voice plays a very important role. This is not a cover, this is my interpretation of this song, and I cherish that.
